Bird seed ornaments are one of the simplest things you can make and children will enjoy getting crafty in the kitchen.
You will need:
120 ml water
2 1/2 teaspoons gelatine
3 tablespoons golden syrup
85 g flour
900 g bird seed
Gently melt the gelatine in the water – you can do this in a microwave or a saucepan. Stir in the golden syrup until it dissolves. In a separate bowl combine the flour and bird seed. Pour the gelatine mixture over and combine thoroughly.
Spray the inside of your cookie cutters with non-stick spray and place them on a piece of waxed or parchment paper. Spoon the bird seed mixture into the cookie cutters and press down firmly with your hands.
Make a hole in the ornament with a skewer, chopstick, drinking straw or pencil so that you can hang your ornaments. Carefully remove the cookie cutter and leave your ornaments to set overnight, ideally in the fridge until they are set.
Thread a piece of ribbon or string through the hole and hang them in your garden for the birds to enjoy.
If you make a larger batch of bird seed ornaments, store them in your freezer so you can replace them as your garden birds eat them.
